On Thursday 18 August, two teams from Springston School travelled to Somerfield School to compete in the annual quiz. The teams had been reading and training for the quiz since the beginning of Term 2. There were twelve books to read and learn; 6 novels and 6 picture books. The two teams chose their names and made team flags that were judged on the night. Our teams were called Shot, Boom, Read! and 6 Red Reading Hoods. Team members were; Gemma, Aria, Adele, Molly, Toby and Georgia; Rosie, Sonya, Joseph, Lucy, Darcie and Xanthe, Estelle, Brigid and Deklyn.

The questions were on the text and the pictures and there were ten questions on each book.

Mrs P was the question reader. There were 3 minutes to write down the answers to each set of questions. The scores were given at the end of Round 3 and Round 8 and then not again until the end. We had a guest speaker, Soraya Nicholas, who spoke about how she became an author, what books she had written and then she read some of her latest story. Later Soraya signed bookmarks for the children and one lucky school won a set of her Starlight Stables books.

Then the winners were announced. Oakland Geniuses were 3rd, Somerfield’s Phenomenal Readers 2nd and our Shot, Boom Read! won by 4 points! Our 6 Red Reading Hoods were 5th out of the 21 teams competing.

Each member of the team got to choose their own book prize and were presented with the trophy. As winners we get to be hosts again next year.

This is the third year in a row we have won. Well done to our Springston Lit Quiz Team and our fantastic Librarian - Karen Winter!
School libraries are adopting this thinking too.
What does our school library mean to you?
Or a favourite Christmas movie that you all watch as a family?

Here are some Christmas movies you may have seen - have I missed some that you enjoy?

The Muppet Christmas Carol
Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Jingle all the way
Fred Claus
Arthur Christmas
The Polar Express

Here is a nice list of Christmas story books - many of them picture books. My favourite Christmas book is one I've had for many years, and it illustrates the the poem and song - 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Clement Clarke Moore is said to have written the original poem, A Visit from
St. Nicholas, in 1823. Here is the poem, sung to a tune we might all recognise:

Or, you might prefer this more modern version of the song - with the pictures telling the story from the poem.

I highly recommend her blog post where she shares 11 ways she uses to grow her sons as readers, and finds joy as a family in doing so. Of course, reading doesn't have to be from a book, but Rochelle finds ways to make reading a family experience. I think you will find her ideas familiar, but also refreshing.

Rochelle mentions a competition, where you can win a book for our school, simply by posting a comment on HER blog post.

Quiz that they had been training for since Term 2. The group had to study 6 picture books and 6 novels and answer questions on the night; 10 for each book.

Springston had two teams entered and 'The One and Only Springston' team were in 2nd place after the first round and then in 1st place until round 8; then we didn't know if we had won until the end. The team scored 10/10 for 5 rounds, 9/10 for 2 rounds and 8/10 for 3, then a 6 and 4.5; total 102.5. A fantastic, well deserved win. Our second team finished with 85.5 points in 9th place and our reserves scored 81.

The winners were presented with a trophy, certificates and got to choose a book and the library also got a bundle of books. All of the children received a selection of goodies in a lunchbox. Thanks to Scholastic for their fantastic sponsorship of this quiz and to Opawa School for hosting the quiz this year; our turn next year! Special thanks to our Librarian, Mrs Winter, for coaching and supporting us!
Does your child love reading?

Do you know how to encourage them?

Bob Docherty suggests 10 simple ideas for parents on how to encourage that love of reading. There may even be one or two tips that provide answers to things you've been wondering about - eg - should they be reading eBooks?

Read Bob's excellent article, 10 tips to encourage children to love reading, on The New Zealand Book Council's 'Booknotes unbound'.Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04041295354596105212noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001169816294889766.post-38613025607127346662014-06-24T11:43:00.000+12:002014-06-24T11:43:03.272+12:00Book Review - The Fault in our Stars - John GreenBook: The Fault in our Stars

We have lots of exciting things happening at the moment!

The Library is being used as a classroom by our Senior Class, until their new classroom is completed in a few weeks. We still manage to fit in visits by other classes whenever possible. We have lots of new students at school, who are finding out what a fabulous Library we have here at Springston School.

Over the holidays we have updated our Library software system, and have made the switch from Musac to Access-It. Karen is busy doing online training and getting the system in place.

One important change will mean that you will be able to search our school catalogue and reserve books from any computer, no matter where it is. So, you can see what books are available from your classroom, or even from home. There will even be access to web links on some topics.

And last but not least, we have new Librarians who are almost ready to start. Look out for an introduction from them soon.

My name is Charles and I just wanted to let you know that the Springston School Library Blog is featured on our new and improved list of Top 50 School Library Blogs.

Since launching in 2011, our Top 50 School Library Blogs page has been viewed over 33,000 times and we wanted to update and improve it. Our page also ranks #2 in Google for "school library blogs" so it is a good way for school librarians to discover your blog.

Our updated list now displays the top school library blogs based on several website popularity metrics such as Google's Page Rank and the number of other websites that link to each blog. We also provide stats on social media engagement via Twitter followers and included a link to each school librarian's Twitter page.

Best,
Charles Sipe
Executive Editor
Teacher Certification DegreesUnknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2001169816294889766.post-59819282462554113862013-11-01T09:54:00.000+13:002013-11-01T18:05:13.429+13:00Winning kids over one book at a time....

We love a recent article in 'The Press', and thought you might find it food for thought as well. It's well worth the read.

What do YOU think about the need for books, libraries, and librarians these days, especially in schools?

How often do you use a library?

We're so lucky here at Springston to have a well-resourced library and skilled librarian.
I was thrilled to learn in the holidays how well they did!
This is part of the email I received:

Your students have taken out all of the 5-7 category, and the 8-12 category of the review competition - a feat that is unmatched, and particularly in the 8-12 category was very strongly contested. Well done!

The winner of the 5-7 age group was Romilly, followed by Mackenzie and Bridget.

The winner of the 8-12 age group was Haidee, followed by Georgia G, and Alice K.

Thank you to the Book Council for the opportunity for the children to publish their reviews and to Scholastic who provide the prize packs for the first place winners and also for the books for the library for having the most entries per capita. We will certainly be entering again.
find out there is more to it than that. Amongst the wreckage of the
newly-beached boat, Zac and Jess find footprints, too big to belong to a dog,
and a round object with teeth marks in it, along with a dog bed labelled
“Tasha”. Jess and Zac soon come to the conclusion that the pet could have been,
and most probably was, illegal. What would a billionaire want with an illegal
